Guggul is the valuable gum resin extracted from the sap of the Indian myrrh (Commiphora Mukul) tree. Traditionally, Guggul is tapped from the stem of the balsam- or myrrh tree. Its Indian name “Guggulu” means “that which protects against diseases”. Ayurveda values the resin with its bitter, pungent, sweet and astringent taste as a Rasayana that is capable of pacifying all three Doshas. Guggul is recommended in particular for Vata or Kapha imbalances.

Guggul has the following properties:
- Rasa (taste) is pungent (Katu) and bitter (Tikta).
- Guna (physical property) is light (Laghu), dry (Rooksha), it clears channels (Vishada), it is minute (Sukshama) and brings movement (Sara).
- Virya (potency) is hot (Ushna).
- Vipaka (metabolic effect) is pungent (Katu).
It balances the Vata and Kapha doshas.
