Guggul is the valuable gum resin of the Indian myrrh (commiphora mukul. Already in ancient Rome, guggul was imported from India. Traditionally, Guggul was tapped from the stem of the balsam- or myrrh tree. Its Indian name “Guggulu” means “that which protects against diseases”. Ayurveda values the resin with its bitter, pungent, sweet and astringent taste as a rasayana (see note) that is capable of pacifying all three Doshas. Guggul is recommended in particular for Vata or Kapha imbalances.
