The global success story of Maharishi Ayurveda began already in the late 1970s. At that time the Vedic scholar and sage Maharishi Mahesh Yogi invited thousands of delegates from many different countries to a large conference in India. The best Ayurvedic scholars from all over India, plus Western doctors and scientists, came to Delhi to bring the various ancient traditions of Ayurveda together and bring them to completion, and later to evaluate them with modern scientific methods.
The most eminent Ayurvedic experts of the time, the late Dr Brihaspati Dev Triguna, Dr V. M. Dwivedi, and Dr Balraj Maharishi made highly significant contributions to the revival of the full range of Ayurvedic knowledge.
At the conference Vaidya Dr B. D. Triguna, Ayurveda luminary and nationally known for his outstanding art of pulse reading, his peerless knowledge of the Ayurvedic texts, winner of the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ (one of the highest civilian honors of India), President of the All India Ayurvedic Congress, and honorary physician to the Prime Minister of India, proposed the name ‘Maharishi Ayurveda’. He explained to those present that thousands of years ago the Rishis and Maharishis (lit: Seer / great seer) acquired the knowledge of Ayurveda. A ‘Maharishi’ of the present was now again gathering the entire Ayurvedic knowledge and bringing it to completion, he said, and Vaidya Triguna therefore proposed that this comprehensive Ayurveda should be called ‘Maharishi Ayurveda’. This is how the name Maharishi Ayurveda came into being.
The goal of this comprehensive Ayurveda, which is precisely in accord with the Ayurvedic texts, was formulated as the creation of a disease-free society, exactly as the teachers of wisdom and seers of the past had expressed it: Ayurveda sees the individual as a body-mind-soul unity, and according to Ayurvedic understanding the self of every individual is fundamentally healthy. Ayurveda can help each of us contact this healthy self that lies dormant within. Maintain health and re-balance imbalances – this is the goal of Ayurveda.
Then it started: With the knowledge and experience of the famous Ayurvedic herbal expert Dr Balaraj Maharishi, and Dr Dwivedi’s incomparable knowledge in the field of ‘Rasayanas’ and herbal extracts, authentic Ayurvedic formulas from the ancient writings were revived, translated into modern terminology and quantities, and the first 300 formulations were developed and manufactured in India, including the legendary Maharishi Amrit Kalash.
The ancient, holistic approach of Ayurveda was combined with the most modern technologies to produce consistently high quality products. Authenticity, purity, quality, reliability, and efficacy were the essential attributes that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi defined at a time when the word ‘sustainability’ was hardly known. And to this day we at Maharishi Ayurveda commit ourselves uncompromisingly to these values. We do not produce an article, for example, when important ingredients are not available, or would have to be replaced by cheaper, lower quality.
